Former Cape Town City and Orlando Pirates coach Eric Tinkler has embarked on a bold new chapter in his coaching career after being officially unveiled as the new head coach of Ghanaian football powerhouse Asante Kotoko.

The appointment, confirmed by the club on Friday with immediate effect, places one of South Africa’s most experienced football figures at the helm of one of Africa’s most decorated clubs. It also marks a significant opportunity for Tinkler to revive another football giant with ambitions of reclaiming dominance both domestically and across the continent.

Asante Kotoko described Tinkler as a coach with a proven track record, extensive top-flight experience and an outstanding playing career, expressing confidence that his leadership will help drive the club’s next era of success.

Holding a CAF A Licence, Tinkler brings more than three decades of experience in elite football. His coaching journey has taken him through some of South Africa’s biggest clubs, including Cape Town City, Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United, Maritzburg United and, most recently, Sekhukhune United.

Throughout that career, the 54-year-old has built a reputation for guiding teams to major competitions and delivering silverware. He famously led Orlando Pirates to the CAF Champions League final and steered SuperSport United to the CAF Confederation Cup final. His domestic honours include lifting the MTN8 and the Telkom Knockout, cementing his status as one of South Africa’s most accomplished coaches.

Long before making his mark in the dugout, Tinkler established himself as one of South Africa’s finest midfielders.

He earned 48 caps for Bafana Bafana, captained the national team at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations, represented South Africa at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and formed part of the historic squad that lifted the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations title. His distinguished playing career also included spells in England, Italy and Portugal.

At Asante Kotoko, Tinkler will work alongside Director of Football Stanley Menzo Purl as the club pursues its ambition of challenging for honours in Ghana while restoring its standing among Africa’s elite.

Speaking after his appointment, Tinkler said he was eager to embrace the challenge.

“I’m honoured and excited to join one of Africa’s most storied football institutions.

“Asante Kotoko’s rich history, passion for success and ambition for development are well known across Africa.

“I look forward to working with the players, staff and management to build a team that can compete and win both domestically and on the continental stage.”

His arrival is expected to generate excitement among supporters, who will be hoping the South African can translate his wealth of experience into trophies and a successful new era for the Ghanaian giants.
