A routine period of detention ended in tragedy after a 46-year-old man died inside a holding cell at Senwabarwana Police Station, prompting an official inquest and an independent investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

The incident occurred on Wednesday in the Senwabarwana policing area, where the man had been held in lawful custody while awaiting his next court appearance.

According to police, the deceased had been arrested in May 2026 on a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He later appeared before the court, where his application for bail was refused. The court subsequently remanded him in custody until 14 August 2026.

Police said the detainee experienced medical complications while being held in a police cell. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were immediately called to the station to provide urgent medical assistance.

When paramedics arrived, they examined the man and declared him dead at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that no visible injuries were found on his body during the initial examination. His identity has not been released while investigations continue and the circumstances surrounding his death are being established.

As required in cases involving deaths in police custody, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate has been notified and has begun its own independent investigation.

Police have also opened an inquest docket to determine the exact cause and circumstances of the man’s death.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are expected to establish whether any additional factors contributed to the incident. Further information will be released once the investigation progresses.
