Limpopo tavern double murder: Two Lesotho nationals arrested after intelligence-led SAPS operation
POLOKWANE, Limpopo — A quiet village tavern in Ga-Selepe has become the centre of a fast-moving murder investigation that has now drawn in cross-border suspects, stolen firearms, and a police operation driven by intelligence work spanning multiple crime scenes.
Two Lesotho nationals are expected to appear before the Mecklenburg Periodical Court after being arrested in connection with a double murder that shocked residents in the Sekhukhune District earlier this month.
What initially appeared to be a localised act of violence has since evolved into a wider investigation, with police uncovering alleged links to a stolen firearm from Gauteng and a getaway vehicle believed to have been used during the attack.
Hospital tip-off leads to first arrest
The breakthrough came on Thursday, 2 July 2026, when detectives from Burgersfort and Mecklenburg, operating under the South African Police Service, acted on intelligence that a 50-year-old suspect had sought medical treatment at a local hospital.
The man, who had reportedly sustained head injuries during the incident, was traced and identified by investigators before being placed under arrest.
Although he initially denied any involvement in the killings and insisted he did not possess a firearm, police say further intelligence quickly shifted the direction of the case.
A coordinated follow-up operation led officers to a 9mm pistol, which investigators believe was used in the murders. The weapon was later confirmed to have been stolen during an armed robbery in Midrand, Gauteng, in October 2025.
Stolen weapon and BMW deepen the investigation
Police also seized a white BMW without registration plates, which is suspected to have been used during the commission of the crime. Investigators are now examining whether the vehicle formed part of a planned escape route after the shooting at the tavern in Ga-Selepe village.
The recovery of both the firearm and the vehicle has strengthened the prosecution’s case, linking the suspect not only to the scene but to a broader pattern of organised criminal activity.
Second suspect arrested in separate operation
In a parallel intelligence-led operation in Sehunyane village, police arrested a 24-year-old Lesotho national who was initially detained for contravening the Immigration Act after it was discovered he was in South Africa unlawfully.
As the investigation deepened, detectives established that the younger suspect had allegedly been present with the main accused during the double murder.
He has since been formally linked to the case and is also accused of involvement with a revolver recovered during the investigation.
He now faces two counts of murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and contravention of the Immigration Act.
Charges mount as investigation expands
The 50-year-old suspect faces two counts of murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm, while further charges remain under consideration as investigators continue to build the case.
Police have not yet confirmed a motive for the attack, leaving key questions unanswered about what triggered the deadly incident inside the tavern.
The operation has been described by senior police leadership as a significant demonstration of coordinated policing across multiple units.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Major General Jan Scheepers, praised the work of investigators, saying the arrests reflect the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and inter-unit cooperation.
As the case moves towards court, investigators are now focused on piecing together the final moments leading up to the shooting and establishing whether more suspects were involved.
