Kaizer Chiefs sign Renaldo Leaner in major goalkeeping boost ahead of 2026/27 season

Kaizer Chiefs, Renaldo Leaner

Kaizer Chiefs have moved decisively to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season, confirming the signing of highly rated goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner in a transfer that underlines the club’s ongoing rebuild.

The 28-year-old arrives at Kaizer Chiefs on a free transfer after the expiry of his contract with Sekhukhune United last month. His availability triggered immediate interest across the South African top flight, with both Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu FC monitoring the situation closely. In the end, Chiefs acted fastest and secured his signature.

For Leaner, the move represents both a step up in profile and a fresh opportunity to establish himself at one of the country’s most scrutinised clubs. For Chiefs, it is another calculated gamble in a position that has long demanded stability and authority.

Leaner now enters a crowded and highly competitive goalkeeping department under new head coach Fernando Da Cruz. He will compete for the number one jersey alongside Brandon Petersen, Bruce Bvuma, Fiacre Ntwari, Bontle Molefe and Takalani Mazhamba, a group that reflects both depth and uncertainty in equal measure.

The club’s internal competition for the gloves is expected to be one of the defining subplots of the upcoming season, with no clear long-term first-choice goalkeeper firmly established.

Leaner’s career has already included a brief taste of international recognition. He earned his first call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad during the March international camp and went on to make his senior debut in a friendly against Panama in Cape Town. However, the match proved difficult, with the goalkeeper conceding twice, and he was later omitted from South Africa’s FIFA World Cup squad.

Despite that setback, Chiefs have seen enough to believe in his potential, particularly in a system that demands composure, aerial dominance and strong distribution from the back.

Confirming the signing, Kaizer Chiefs issued a brief but pointed statement welcoming their new arrival: “Leaner becomes a Khosi. Kaizer Chiefs have strengthened their goalkeeping department with the signing of renowned shot-stopper Renaldo Leaner. We proudly welcome Renaldo to the Khosi Nation.”

The announcement forms part of a broader recruitment drive as Chiefs continue reshaping their squad identity under Da Cruz. After seasons of inconsistency and fan frustration, the Soweto giants are once again attempting to reset expectations through targeted signings rather than sweeping overhaul.

Whether Leaner becomes the long-term answer between the posts or another name in a rotating cast of goalkeepers will depend on performance, patience and the pressure that comes with wearing the gold and black jersey.

For now, Chiefs have made their move. The next chapter belongs to Renaldo Leaner.
