Fashion Industry Mourns Sandile Mlambo as Family Prepares Final Farewell

Sandile Mlambo funeral

Award-winning fashion designer Sandile Mlambo, whose creativity left a lasting mark on South Africa’s fashion landscape, will be laid to rest on Saturday following his sudden passing at the age of 47.

The death of the acclaimed designer has sent shockwaves through the fashion industry and beyond, with celebrities, colleagues and admirers paying tribute to a man whose work helped shape red carpet glamour and contemporary South African style.

Mlambo, the founder of the clothing label House of Alfalfa, was widely recognised for his distinctive designs and for dressing some of the country’s best-known personalities, including actress Dawn Thandeka King.

His passing comes at a time when he was reportedly preparing for one of the biggest events on South Africa’s social and fashion calendar, the Hollywoodbets Durban July, where he had planned to showcase a range of new designs.

A Career Defined by Talent and Determination

Mlambo’s rise in the fashion world earned him widespread recognition, including an appearance on the television talent competition Project Runway South Africa.

His reputation as a gifted designer was further cemented in 2013 when he emerged victorious at the Durban Fashion Fair, taking top honours for his innovative creations.

Over the years, he built a loyal following and became known for his attention to detail, craftsmanship and commitment to celebrating South African fashion through his work.

Family Speaks Out Following Tragic Loss

Speaking on behalf of the family, Sandile’s brother, Nkosi Mlambo, said they hoped people would remember the designer for the impact he made throughout his career and the legacy he leaves behind.

According to Nkosi, Sandile suffered from asthma and was alone when he experienced an attack.

“Sandile suffered from asthma, so he was alone when an attack hit him. There was no one around to help him or rush him to the hospital for medical assistance,” he said.

The family has asked for privacy as they continue to process the tragedy while expressing gratitude for the support they have received from the public.

“We appreciate the love people have shown us since this tragedy occurred. We would also like to thank everyone who supported him in the fashion industry and those he dressed. It means a lot to us as a family,” Nkosi said.

A Celebration of a Designer’s Legacy

As loved ones prepare to bid farewell, the family has encouraged supporters to honour Mlambo in a way that reflects his life’s work.

Nkosi said they would like people attending Saturday’s service to wear garments designed and tailored by Sandile as a tribute to his creativity and contribution to the industry.

The family hopes the day will not only be one of mourning but also a celebration of the remarkable body of work he leaves behind.

They are also beginning discussions about the future of his business, a brand built through years of dedication, passion and hard work.

Funeral Details

Sandile Mlambo’s funeral service will take place at his family home in KwaSomkhele near Mtubatuba on Saturday at 9am.

As South Africa’s fashion community gathers to say goodbye, many will remember not only the garments he created but also the talent, ambition and artistic vision that helped establish him as one of the industry’s respected creative voices.

For those who knew him personally and for the many who admired his work from afar, Saturday will mark the final chapter in a life stitched together by creativity, perseverance and a deep love for fashion.
