Limpopo Illegal Mining Crackdown Nets Nine Undocumented Foreign Nationals in 10-Hour Police Operation
POLOKWANE – A sweeping police operation targeting illegal mining activities in Limpopo has resulted in the arrest of nine undocumented foreign nationals, underscoring the growing battle against illicit mining networks operating across the province.
The arrests were made during a focused 10-hour operation conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Bergnek Village, located in the Capricorn District, on Thursday.
The operation formed part of intensified efforts by law enforcement authorities to disrupt illegal mining activities, identify suspected offenders and clamp down on related criminal activities that continue to threaten communities and economic stability.
Police confirmed that the nine arrested individuals, aged between 19 and 38, were taken into custody for alleged contraventions of South Africa’s immigration laws.
The operation extended far beyond a single site. Officers moved across the area, conducting inspections at six farms, four suspected illegal mining locations and eight identified crime hotspots.
In a coordinated effort, police searched 12 individuals, inspected five premises and searched and tested three vehicles. Members also carried out extensive foot patrols and route patrols throughout the area as part of the broader crime prevention initiative.
The operation highlights the increasing pressure being placed on illegal mining networks, which authorities say continue to pose serious challenges to public safety, environmental protection and economic development.
Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised officers involved in the operation for their commitment and determination.
“Illegal mining poses significant risks to community safety, economic development and the environment. We remain resolute in our efforts to dismantle illegal mining operations and ensure that all individuals operating outside the law are brought to justice,” said Hadebe.
She added that similar operations would continue across the province as authorities seek to safeguard communities and protect South Africa’s natural resources.
Illegal mining remains a persistent concern in several parts of South Africa, with law enforcement agencies increasingly targeting operations linked to undocumented migration, organised crime and environmental degradation.
The latest arrests in Bergnek signal that the fight against illegal mining in Limpopo is far from over, with police vowing to maintain pressure on those operating outside the law.
