Paul Wood instructed LatestSightings.com about this once-in-a-lifetime expertise.

“This video was taken simply after 11:00 within the Pilanesberg National Park, on Moloto Road.

“We have been slowly heading again in direction of our lodge after an early morning sport drive once we came across a big troop of baboons. We have been having fun with the spectacle, as we hadn’t actually had any good sightings of baboons on our journey. The troop was transferring down the highway in the wrong way from us and we steadily made our well past them. As we got here round a bend within the highway, all of us noticed what turned out to be the final member of the troop, a younger grownup male baboon, and he was visibly clutching one thing small underneath his stomach with one arm. At this level, the baboon was solely 10 m or so in entrance of our car.

“Within seconds, and with all eyes on him, he juggled what he was carrying and all of us gasped because it was clearly a tiny leopard cub. The preliminary response from myself, and the information, was that the cub was certainly already useless and the baboon had merely picked it up whereas foraging, or, maybe, had even been concerned in its loss of life. However, after a number of extra seconds, it was apparent that the cub was very a lot alive!

“At that time, the sighting took on a complete new side as we have been confronted, in nature, with one thing that appeared by some means… unnatural. An grownup baboon shouldn’t be carrying round a leopard cub! The cub belongs with its mom! I feel we have been all hoping that the baboon would lose curiosity within the cub and go away it behind in order that there could be the smallest probability that it may very well be reunited with its mom. But, as we watched, it was clear that the baboon was very within the cub and was intent on taking it together with him. He would sit quietly with it, sometimes trying right down to verify on it, and even groomed the cub as we watched. He was fairly mild with it, if slightly clumsy, however didn’t seem to need to hurt it in any method.

“The baboon was a way behind the remainder of the troop. However, he was nonetheless maintaining with them, sitting some time with the cub, then choosing it up with one arm and persevering with down the highway slightly as the space between him and the remainder of the troop grew too massive. Eventually, he adopted the remainder of the troop off-road and into the lengthy grass, choosing up tempo as he re-joined the others. Not lengthy after leaving the highway the baboon disappeared over a small ridge, down an embankment, and moved shortly out of sight.

“I don’t know if a male baboon with a reside leopard cub has ever been seen/recorded earlier than. It’s the primary I’ve ever heard of this particular mixture. For me, personally, it was definitely a primary and I don’t anticipate to ever see one thing like that once more. It was an unbelievable sighting, however bitter-sweet for all of us watching, as a result of we knew the cub wouldn’t be capable to survive greater than just some hours away from its mother.

“When you’re on safari, document every thing. Don’t cease recording. You can edit later. This is just not one thing you’re more likely to ever see once more!

“Later, Lauren Pretorius sent photos of a baboon carrying a leopard cub. We thought that it must be the same sighting, as we had never seen anything like this before. But no! It was a different event completely. Pretorius had been visiting Olifants and spotted this baboon just after it found a leopard cub.”
