A 32-year-old man who allegedly impregnated an 11-year-old girl is expected to appear in the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The suspect was arrested on Friday, 15 May.
Western Cape police spokesperson, Captain Frederick van Wyk, confirmed that a warrant had been issued for the suspect’s arrest.
“This office can confirm that a 32-year-old man was arrested on Friday, 15 May, on a warrant of arrest. He will appear in the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 18 May,” said Van Wyk.
This comes after Atlantis residents expressed outrage following revelations that the 11-year-old girl gave birth about a week ago, allegedly due to sexual abuse involving a person known to the family.
The child’s mother was also arrested and has already appeared in the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed her court appearance. NPA spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, verified the development.
“Yes, we can confirm that the mother of the 11-year-old child appeared in the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court on a charge of failing to report the commission of a sexual offence,” Ntabazalila said.
The case against the mother has been postponed to Tuesday, 19 May.
