North West controversial businessman and alleged political fixer Brown Mogotsi is reportedly not coping well in police custody following his arrest on Friday evening, 15 May 2026.
According to his lawyer, Makau William Sekgatja of Radasi Sekgatja Inc, Mogotsi is finding conditions in the cells difficult, describing him as emotionally distressed amid cold temperatures and challenges adjusting to detention.
Mogotsi was arrested shortly after concluding testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria, where he faced questions about alleged corruption in the justice system and invoked his right against self-incrimination on multiple occasions.
A multidisciplinary SAPS team executed a J50 warrant of arrest on charges of defeating the ends of justice.
The charges stem from an alleged staged assassination attempt on Mogotsi in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg, in November 2025.
Sekgatja described the arrest as an “ambush,” claiming the legal team was not alerted in advance and that a subpoena would have sufficed for such a high-profile individual. The lawyer indicated plans to pursue civil action against the state for malicious prosecution and unlawful arrest.
Mogotsi is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday for a formal bail application.
