The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal is mourning the passing of uMhlathuze Deputy Mayor and DA mayoral candidate, Councillor Christo Botha.
Botha passed away on Tuesday morning following health complications. He had been in critical condition and receiving intensive medical care since last week.
DA KZN leader Sthembiso Ngema confirmed Botha’s passing in a statement, extending condolences to his family, loved ones, colleagues, and the people of uMhlathuze.
“The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal extends its sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of DA uMhlathuze Deputy Mayor, Councillor Christo Botha, who passed away this morning,” Ngema said.
Ngema described Botha as an outstanding leader and servant of the people.
“The DA has lost not only a Deputy Mayor but an outstanding leader and servant of the people who was set to contest as our mayoral candidate in the upcoming local government elections,” he said.
Botha had been nominated as the DA’s mayoral candidate for the City of uMhlathuze ahead of the 2026 local government elections. IOL previously reported that he had been receiving critical medical care and that his condition was serious.
Ngema said Botha would be remembered for his commitment to public service and dedication to the residents of uMhlathuze.
“He will forever be remembered for his commitment to serving the people of uMhlathuze and the DA. We mourn with his family and loved ones during this difficult time,” he said.
Botha’s passing comes as the DA in uMhlathuze prepares for a crucial local government election campaign.
