An investigation is underway following an incident in which a South African Police Service constable allegedly assaulted a member of the public, with a video of the incident widely circulated on social media.
The incident is reported to have taken place on 02 April 2026 at the Volksrust Police Station in Mpumalanga.
According to Mpumalanga SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the matter is being treated with seriousness, and an internal investigation has already been instituted to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“In addition to the internal investigation, a criminal investigation is also underway to ensure that all aspects of the matter are addressed transparently,” Mdhluli said.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has also been notified and is expected to conduct a parallel investigation.
Mdhluli said the involvement of IPID aligns with the SAPS commitment to accountability and transparency in policing.
“The SAPS remains steadfast in promoting professionalism and upholding the Code of Conduct, which governs the behaviour of all members,” he said.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, has also weighed in on the matter.
“The professional conduct of our members is of utmost importance, and we are committed to maintaining public trust. We are determined to act swiftly and decisively against any wrongdoing,” he said.
Investigations remain ongoing.
