The Azania Movement has noticed the recent coronation of Igwe/Chief Solomon Ogbonna Eziko in KuGompo City, which was tied to the Ohaneze Ndigbo group. As an organisation that works to fix real challenges in our communities, we strongly believe that kingship, chieftaincy and cultural leadership must always follow the proper customs, protocols and the authority of the land.
KuGompo City sits squarely within the AmaRharhabe Kingdom, led by King Jonguxolo Sandile. Any cultural or traditional ceremony here needs the full knowledge, guidance and blessing of the rightful custodians. Sadly, Ohaneze Ndigbo skipped those essential steps, creating a clear breach of customary authority that simply cannot
be ignored.
Even though it’s being presented as a joyful cultural event, the correct way demands direct engagement with the monarch who governs that land. No ceremony should ever happen on a king’s territory without his consent. Across Africa, royal houses have always shown respect to one another through proper introductions and time-honoured protocols.
Azania Movement President Nolubabalo Mcinga put it plainly: “Respect for traditional authority and proper protocol is not optional – it is the foundation of unity and must never be overlooked. In our own South African context, no cultural event takes place without the knowledge and consent of the king. It is deeply disappointing that this principle was not upheld. Mabadliwe.”
To put things right, those involved must now present themselves before the AmaRharhabe Kingdom, explain their actions and follow the customary processes needed to restore harmony, dignity and respect in the community. African cultural matters should always be resolved through African systems, guided by legitimate traditional leaders and rooted in established customs.
