A major breakthrough has been made in a deadly cash in transit heist that shocked Mpumalanga, with a 41 year old suspect arrested in connection with the brutal attack that left security guards dead.
The suspect was arrested at the Springs Magistrates Court on Thursday by members of the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, working together with the Nkangala District Flying Squad.
Police say the arrest is linked to a violent incident that took place on 27 February 2026 in Emalahleni.
According to reports, heavily armed suspects ambushed security guards as they were preparing to load money into an ATM.
During the attack, one security officer was shot and killed on the scene, while another sustained fatal injuries.
The suspects then fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, using a VW Jetta and a VW Polo sedan as getaway vehicles.
Authorities have confirmed that the arrested suspect is expected to appear before the Witbank Magistrates Court on Monday.
He will face multiple serious charges including murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, conspiracy to commit murder and charges related to illegal immigration status.
The case has once again highlighted the extreme dangers faced by cash in transit security personnel, as well as the ongoing threat posed by organised crime syndicates operating across the country.
Police investigations are continuing, with more arrests expected as authorities close in on other suspects involved in the deadly heist.
