The sentencing of convicted child-killer Amber Lee Hughes has been postponed until 15 April 2026 due to logistical issues. The decision was made during proceedings at the Johannesburg High Court, where the case has drawn national attention.
Hughes, a 26-year-old former preschool teacher, was convicted in August 2025 for the rape and murder of four-year-old Nada Jane Challita. The tragic incident occurred on 23 January 2023 at a home in Glenvista while the child was in Hughes’ care.
In disturbing testimony before the court, Hughes admitted she held the child under water in a bathtub until she drowned. She later told the court she believed the act was “the only possible way out” and claimed she was trying to save the child from what she described as a life of neglect.
The court also heard that the killing followed an argument between Hughes and the child’s father, Elie Challita, regarding alleged infidelity.
Hughes has already spent three years in custody while the case progressed through the legal system. During the trial, evidence was presented about her mental health history, including bipolar disorder and the fact that she had stopped taking prescribed medication months before the crime due to financial difficulties.
The postponed sentencing has sparked renewed public discussion across South Africa about justice, mental health, and child protection.
