A 26-year-old man charged in connection with the murder of an 18-year-old woman is expected to apply for Legal Aid when he returns to the Nkowa Nkowa Magistrate’s Court.
Matome Issaic Masiya appeared briefly before the Nkowa Nkowa Magistrate’s Court on Monday in connection with the murder of Kgopotso Remember Mushwana. The accused appeared in court wearing a faded black T-shirt and did not address the court on the merits of the charge. He has not yet secured legal representation.

Mushwana, described by relatives as a young woman with a promising future, was allegedly stabbed in the stomach with a sharp object and later succumbed to her injuries in hospital. Members of Mushwana’s family attended the court proceedings in large numbers and expressed distress over the accused’s conduct during his appearance. “We are hurt and disgusted by the lack of remorse,” said one family member outside court. Police said the suspect had been on the run following the incident and was arrested last Wednesday after a seven-day manhunt, prompted by a tip-off. The accused has been remanded in custody and is expected to apply for Legal Aid on Tuesday, 30 December 2025. The matter has been postponed pending the completion of the Legal Aid application.
