Cedrick Nkabinde, chief of staff to Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, returns to Parliament’s ad hoc committee today after his explosive and abruptly halted appearance last week.
During his testimony on 13 November, Nkabinde admitted to “thumb-sucking” dates in his affidavit — a confession that exposed major inconsistencies between his written statement and his oral evidence.
MPs from across the political spectrum reacted sharply, with committee chair Soviet Lekganyane slamming his failure to answer basic, verifiable questions. Julius Malema accused him of deliberately misleading Parliament, while Leigh-Ann Mathys called for perjury charges. The EFF has since opened a formal criminal case.
Nkabinde defended himself by claiming he lacked access to his work devices — allegedly seized — and that he didn’t have enough time to verify key details before drafting the affidavit.
Today, the committee expects a corrected, credible version of his account. Parliamentary Legal Services is also examining whether disciplinary or criminal consequences should follow.
All eyes are now on whether Nkabinde can salvage his credibility under growing pressure.
