KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi appeared before the parliamentary portfolio committee on police on March 5, 2025, where he presented explosive allegations of criminality, political interference, and corruption within the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Despite the seriousness of these revelations, the portfolio committee allegedly failed to act. The matter only came to broader public attention after the allegations were disclosed in a media briefing on July 6, 2025.
The committee’s alleged inaction has drawn sharp criticism. Maj-Gen Petronella van Rooyen, head of the SAPS legal division, argued that the lack of response amounted to a “failure of their mandate.”
In response to the growing controversy, an ad hoc committee was established to investigate the allegations. This committee has been tasked with compiling and presenting its findings to the National Assembly by October 31, 2025.
