Western Cape police have scored a major breakthrough in the fight against violent crime after intercepting a consignment of firearms smuggled from KwaZulu-Natal to Cape Town.
In a pre-dawn raid on a Bellville flat, officers recovered six AK-47 rifles, eight 9mm pistols, and ammunition. The eight men found at the scene could not produce any valid licenses or permits for the weapons and were immediately arrested.
Authorities believe the firearms were destined for criminal networks in the city, and police say their removal has likely prevented serious crimes.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court once formally charged. Police leadership praised the swift operation, highlighting it as proof of SAPS’s ongoing efforts to keep communities safe.
