Lasizwe Dambuza is speaking out about the need for clarity and fairness when it comes to taxing digital creators.
The TV personality and content creator explained that while he has always paid his taxes, the influencer industry doesn’t operate like traditional jobs. Payments are often delayed, and income comes in many forms—ranging from cash to brand deals, gifts, and trade exchanges.
“Sometimes creators wait months to be paid, and even then, our value is constantly negotiated down. You’d never bargain over the price of bread at a store, yet in this industry, that’s our reality,” he shared.
Lasizwe believes that without proper understanding, taxing influencers could punish those struggling to survive rather than those truly succeeding. He suggested that workshops or open discussions with the tax authorities would help creators better understand their responsibilities and contribute in a way that feels fair and sustainable.
He also pointed out that many influencers spend more than they earn, covering the costs of appearances, outfits, travel, and makeup, only to be offered small perks or goodie bags that are now also seen as taxable.
“Being an influencer is not as glamorous as it looks. It’s tough, and many young creators are just trying to make ends meet,” he said.
While tax officials have emphasized to that all forms of influencer income must be declared, Lasizwe insists the focus should be on educating and supporting creators, not overwhelming them with rules that don’t reflect the realities of their work.
