Foreign-owned spaza shops in Cape Town’s townships say they are under relentless pressure from extortion gangs.
In Khayelitsha alone, more than 30 shops have already closed after criminals demanded higher payments.
The situation has escalated to the point where police are also being targeted, believed to be in retaliation for the death of Ayanda “Stix” Yisaka, a suspected Boko Haram gang leader, who was killed in a police shootout.
