Tragedy struck the Kennedy Road informal settlement in Durban during the early hours of Saturday when a devastating fire tore through the community, claiming the lives of a mother and her one-year-old child.
The blaze, which has yet to be explained, destroyed more than 80 homes, leaving hundreds of residents without shelter. Emergency response teams remain at the scene, working through the aftermath as displaced families try to come to terms with their loss.
Amid the chaos, volunteers and relief workers have stepped in to support those affected. They’ve been distributing essential items such as bread, tea, peanut butter, and warm clothing to help people cope with the chilly, wet conditions in the area.
The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, and disaster management teams are expected to chart a path forward for the displaced families in the coming hours.
For now, the community mourns its loss and waits for answers — and help.
