Police have arrested two men in the Siqalo informal settlement in Gugulethu, Cape Flats, on charges of extortion following complaints from local business owners.
Concerned entrepreneurs alerted authorities after receiving threatening letters demanding protection fees. In response, police engaged with community business leaders to coordinate a plan to address the growing problem.
Officers were strategically deployed near several targeted business premises. Their vigilance paid off when two suspects, aged 19 and 25, arrived. The men were immediately apprehended and taken into custody.
They are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court soon to face charges related to extortion. Police have reaffirmed their commitment to combating intimidation and protecting communities from criminal activities.
