Five people have been arrested in connection with illegal mining operations near Burgersfort in Limpopo. The arrests took place in the Atok and Ga-Phasha villages, as part of a wider effort to curb illegal mining in the province.
Authorities say one of the suspects, a truck driver, was caught allegedly transporting chrome without proper documentation. The vehicle was seized, and it was later discovered that the driver was also in the country illegally.
In a separate raid, four other individuals were arrested at Ga-Phasha. Like the driver, they are facing charges related to both illegal mining and immigration violations.
Police have emphasized their ongoing commitment to tackling illegal mining, which continues to threaten the environment, local communities, and the economy. Officials say the operations serve as a reminder that efforts to protect natural resources and uphold the law will remain relentless.
