The manager of Enyobeni Tavern, Siyakhangela Ndevu, continues to testify for a third straight day at the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court in East London. His appearance is part of an inquest into the deaths of 21 teenagers who tragically lost their lives at the tavern in 2022.
During cross-examination, Ndevu was questioned by legal representatives for the victims’ families, as well as a former employee, Thembisa Diko. In his testimony, Ndevu claimed he did not realize that he was legally responsible for ensuring the safety of his patrons.
The families of the deceased children have expressed frustration with the delays in the legal process. Last month marked the third anniversary of the tragedy, and the victims were honored in a candlelight memorial held at St. Peter’s Methodist Church in Scenery Park.
Many of the grieving families are still waiting for closure and continue to seek accountability for the devastating loss of their children.
