A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Leslie, Mpumalanga, on Thursday when a domestic dispute turned deadly. A 30-year-old man, John Masuku, lost his life after setting himself, his 28-year-old partner, and their two-year-old daughter on fire in what police describe as an attempted murder case.
The tragic chain of events began during an argument at the couple’s home. Masuku, accusing his partner of infidelity, allegedly doused himself, the woman, and the toddler with petrol before igniting it. The mother, clutching the child, managed to escape the blaze and ran to nearby relatives for help.
Emergency services rushed all three to hospital. While doctors worked to stabilize them, the severity of the child’s injuries required her transfer to a specialized facility. Masuku was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. The mother and child remain hospitalized and are currently recovering.
Authorities are treating the case as attempted murder, and investigations are ongoing.
Provincial police commissioner, Major-General Zeph Mkhwanazi, expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing the urgent need for non-violent approaches to handling domestic issues.
“This is a painful reminder of how unresolved conflict can escalate into irreversible tragedy. We urge anyone feeling overwhelmed to seek help — there are professionals and support systems available. Violence is never the answer,” Mkhwanazi said.
