A quiet visit to her partner’s workplace ended in tragedy for a 51-year-old woman from East London, who died under troubling circumstances in a Mthatha hospital on Friday.
The woman had reportedly gone to see her 57-year-old partner at the car dealership where he works on May 31. What should have been a routine visit allegedly turned violent. According to police spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo, she was assaulted during the visit. The man later took her to hospital the next day, June 1, claiming that she had been attacked by unknown assailants near the dealership.
Days later, he returned to the hospital with refreshments for her. But shortly after his visit, her condition worsened. She passed away around 2pm that same day.
Investigators reviewed electronic evidence and arrested the suspect later that evening. A post-mortem is being conducted to confirm the cause of her death.
Acting OR Tambo district commissioner Brigadier Vukile Ntuli welcomed the swift arrest and stressed the need for justice:
> “We can no longer tolerate this brutal violence against women.”
