Free State Policespokesperson Sergent Mahlomola Kareli said it was on Tuesday, 3 June 2025 at approximately 06:00, combat operators, working in close cooperation with mine security, apprehended two suspects emerging from underground at a mine in Vierfontein. The team executed a tactical operation, intercepting the individuals.
Upon searching the suspects, the team discovered five (5) gold nuggets with an estimated street value of R350,000. In addition to the gold, the operators also seized gold-bearing material, explosive detonators, Borax, and mercury.
The two arrested individuals who are illegal immigrants aged 24 and 25, were arrested for theft and suspected possession of possible gold-bearing material, illegal mining and contravention of imigration act.
