A suspected robber was killed on Monday afternoon while trying to escape after allegedly robbing two men in Verulam, north of Durban.
According to Prem Balram, spokesperson for Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), officers responded to reports of a pedestrian being knocked down on the R102 northbound lane near Southridge Circle. Emergency services arrived around 4:07pm and found a man with severe injuries. Paramedics confirmed he had died at the scene.
Investigations revealed that the deceased and an accomplice had just robbed two individuals of their cellphones. The victims reportedly chased the pair onto the R102, where one of the suspects was hit by a white Ford Bantam bakkie during the attempted escape.
A kitchen knife and the stolen phones were found beside the man’s body.
