POTCHEFSTROOM – A tactical intelligence driven operation in Mahikeng led to the arrest of a man (56) on Tuesday 16 April 2025 at approximately 08:00 in the morning. According to information received, police received a tip off about a man allegedly in possession of unlicensed firearm and an endangered specie (pangolin). It was further stated that a man is a traditional healer originally from Lesotho, however he lives as a tenant in Setlagole for over ten (10) years Upon interception at a place of his abode, police searched his house. There was no firearm recovered, however, police found a pangolin shell with the estimated value of +-R500 000.00. The suspect was immediately arrested and charged with contravention of NEMBA (National Environmental Management Biodiversity) Act 10/ 2024 Section 57(1). The suspect will appear before Setlagole Periodical court on Tuesday 22 April 2025. The Prosecutor authenticated his first appearance date that it would still be embraced by the legal precepts of the law. Investigation into this matter continues.
Acting Provincial Commissioner of the North West Province, Major General Patrick Asaneng, welcomed the arrest. He commended the police for bringing perpetrators to book, stating that all who commit crime of any sort will face the bitter wrath of the law.
