POLOKWANE – The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has strongly condemned acts of vigilantism by community members who continuously commit crime by taking the law into their own hands. This warning comes against background of two recent incidents within the Mankweng as well as another one in Thabazimbi. On Thursday, 17 April 2025 at about 12:30, police were summoned to a gruesome murder incident of a 24-year-old victim allegedly accused of stealing empty beer bottles in Moremadi Park, Mankweng. The emergency medical services personnel were summoned to the scene and the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. The victim’s identity will be released in due course. Two suspects have since been arrested in relation to the incident. This incident follows another one which happened at Ga-Motholo village on Wednesday, 16 April 2025 at about 21:00, about a mob attack incident in progress outside the University of Limpopo, Gate 01. Upon arrival, they found a male victim in his twenties lying on the street with multiple severe injuries on the body and was later pronounced deceased. The suspects are still on the run. In a separate incident, the police at Thabazimbi Waterberg District, on Thursday 17 April 2025 at about 14:10, responded to a complain at Appiesdoring informal settlement where they found a male person laying on the street after sustaining multiple open wounds on his body. The Emergency Medical Services personnel were summoned and the victim was certified dead at the scene. While still busy at the scene, they received information that members of the community were chasing the alleged suspect who stabbed the deceased and were busy assaulting him. The police responded swiftly and rescued the victim who was taken to hospital where he succumbed due to his injuries. The motive of all these mob attacks are under police investigations.
