A 14-year-old Grade 9 student at a high school in Cape Town is living in fear after being threatened with a knife following a classroom joke that offended a fellow learner.
According to the boy’s grandmother, Zulfah, the situation escalated when the classmate allegedly called friends from another school, Harold Cressy High School, and asked them to attack her grandson after school. The grandmother revealed that a similar threat occurred last year, but the boy had kept it to himself.
On the day of the latest incident, the boy was confronted by a group from Harold Cressy who reportedly pulled out a knife. He managed to escape by running back into the school building and hiding. He did not return home until after 6 p.m.
The disagreement began after the boy made a playful comment about a girl in class who was interested in the alleged aggressor. When asked what he had discussed with the girl, he responded jokingly, “It’s for me to know and for you to find out,” which reportedly angered the other learner.

Zulfah reported the matter to the school, and the principal assured her it would be investigated. However, she expressed concern for her grandson’s safety and said she could not sit back and wait for something worse to happen.
The Western Cape Education Department confirmed that the incident had been reported and that the school is looking into the matter. They stated that there was no immediate indication of any issues on the school grounds at the time, but further inquiries are ongoing.
