NELSPRUIT – A Disruptive operation conducted by members deployed for Operation Vala Umgodi in Mpumalanga joined by the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing and Ehlanzeni District resulted in the arrests of 17 suspects aged between 19 and 42 on 12 April 2025 at Barberton area extension 11 and surroundings for various crimes, including contravention of the Immigration Act of South Africa, possession of mercury as well as conspiracy to commit illicit mining. According to a report, the astute members together with Hi-tech security company were conducting a sting operation around the said area when they arrested 15 undocumented foreign nationals, of which five amongst them were also charged with conspiracy to commit illicit mining activities the other two for possession of mercury. Illicit cigarettes, liquor, firearm and ammunitions were also recovered during the operation. The suspects are expected to appear at the Barberton Magistrate’s Court soon. Meanwhile, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi has reiterated that Operation Vala Umgodi is here to stay and thus far, the achievements made are evident that a positive impact has been made.
