GAUTENG – The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) has secured a momentous guilty verdict against Hlulani Mabuza (32) and Sihle Ntuli (29) for the harrowing double murder of Sergeant Vusi Batsha (45) and Constable Kgotso Malahlela (24) in October 2022. This pivotal verdict underscores the unwavering dedication and exceptional investigative prowess of the SOCI team. On the evening of 21 October 2022, at approximately 21:45, Sgt. Batsha and Cst. Malahlela were ambushed while attending to an inquest at the corner of Field and Main Reef Road in Lilianton. The suspects demanded their service firearms, leading to a fatal struggle. Sgt. Batsha was tragically shot dead at the scene, and Cst. Malahlela, while seeking cover, was fatally shot moments later. Both service firearms were stolen. Swift action and intelligence gathering led to a breakthrough on 22 April 2023. DPCI SOCI, in collaboration with Gauteng Special Law Enforcement officials, arrested Hlulani Mabuza and two accomplices at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court. Though their initial court appearance for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition was not placed on the roll, the SOCI team’s prompt re-arrest ensured their detention. Sihle Ntuli was apprehended on 24 May 2023 at Harrismith Correctional Services in the Free State following detailed investigations. His interrogation yielded critical information, directly linking him to the crime scene. Through exhaustive efforts, investigators built an unassailable case that culminated in justice for the fallen officers. On Tuesday, 08 April 2025, the Johannesburg High Court convicted Mabuza and Ntuli on charges including: – Two (2) counts of murder
– Two (2) counts of attempted murder
– Two (2) counts of armed robbery
– Possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition
– Robbery with aggravating circumstances Sentencing is set for Friday, 11 April 2025, at the Johannesburg High Court. Acting Provincial Head of the Hawks in Gauteng, Brigadier Phumeza Klaas, lauded the SOCI team’s relentless commitment to justice. She also expressed gratitude to the Metro Police Department and Gauteng Traffic for their invaluable support during the arrests. “This verdict brings solace to the families of Sgt. Batsha and Cst. Malahlela and reaffirms our unwavering dedication to dismantling organised crime and safeguarding our communities,” Brigadier Klaas stated.
