Afro-soul singer and songwriter Yolanda Nyembezi, known professionally as Yallunder, has passed away at the age of 30.

Her manager, Lerato Sejeng, confirmed that she died on Thursday at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg.

Born on August 23, 1994, in Bizana, Eastern Cape, Yallunder began her music career by sharing cover songs on social media platforms, which garnered attention from prominent artists like Black Coffee and Sjava. In 2018, she signed with Sjava’s record label, 1020 Cartel, and released her debut EP, Uthando Lwam, in 2020.

Her music seamlessly blended Afro-soul with traditional South African sounds, earning her critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base.

Yallunder’s family released a statement expressing their profound sorrow: “A soul so rare and a voice so rich, Yolanda graced this earth with a spirit that was as warm as it was powerful.” They noted that she had been battling an illness for several months before her passing.

Her contributions to the South African music scene, characterized by her rich vocals and heartfelt lyrics, have left an indelible mark. Fans and fellow artists have taken to social media to pay tribute to her legacy and mourn her untimely death.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
