Media Statement ZWELITSHA – A man who brutally murdered his girlfriend and her elderly mother was sentenced to life imprisonment after pleading guilty to multiple charges. The case began on 04 March 2023, when the son of the deceased reported missing persons (his 74-year-old mother, Fihliwe Sgam, and his 19-year-old sister, Loveness Kumwenda). He last saw them on 03 March 2023 around 19:40, and when he returned home the next morning, they were not at home. Police launched a search and Loveness Kumwenda’s body was discovered in a house under construction. She had been brutally murdered. The community members immediately suspected her abusive boyfriend, and when the boyfriend was confronted, he escaped, raising further suspicion. The search continued for the mother, Fihliwe Sgam, and hours later, her body was found hidden under her double bed, with a rope tightly wrapped around her naked body. On 05 March 2023, the suspect was arrested while trying to get a lift to Gqeberha after a thorough investigation. He appeared at Keiskamahoek Magistrate Court and was denied bail. Two years later, on 04 March 2025, he pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced to life imprisonment for both murders. He also sentenced as follows:
