POTCHEFSTROOM – A Crime Intelligence led operation by the District Detectives and Brits Trio Task Team, resulted in the arrest of eight suspects on Thursday, 27 and Friday, 28 February 2025, in Atteridgeville, Pretoria and Sgandaff Section, Majakaneng village, for possession of suspected stolen motor vehicle, robbery, hijacking and two counts of murder. The crimes were committed in January 2025, in Mooinooi outside Brits. The Bojanala Platinum Sub-District 2 Detectives were conducting investigation when they spotted the hijacked Isuzu bakkie in Atteridgeville. The members activated Brits Trio Task Team and the vehicle was later stopped. The action led to the apprehension of three suspects. Further probe led the team to a house in Sgandaff Section, Majakaneng village, where five suspects were arrested in the early hours of Friday morning, 28 February 2025. The arrests were effected in connection with an incident wherein a 55-year-old man was allegedly shot and killed at around 19:30, on Sunday, 26 January 2025. According to reports, the man was on his way home after closing his vegetable market in Majakaneng village. He was approached by three males who allegedly robbed him of his white Isuzu bakkie, a Samsung cellphone, an undisclosed amount of cash, then shot and killed him. In the course of the incident, the suspects mistakenly shot one of their own, aged 39. The injured suspect was taken along, but later shot dead and his body dumped in the bushes near Majakaneng village. Preliminary investigation has shown that two of the five suspects are South Africans, aged 32 and 33. The other three, aged 33, 36 and 48, are undocumented Mozambique nationals. As a result, they were also charged for contravention of Section 49 (1) (a) of the Immigration Act, 2002. The initial three suspects arrested in Atteridgeville are expected to appear in the local Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 03 March 2025. The other suspects are also expected to appear on Monday, 03 March 2025, in the Brits Magistrates’ Court, facing charges of robbery, hijacking and two counts of murder. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng, appreciated the members for their collaborative and tireless efforts to ensure that alleged perpetrators are brought to book.
