Media Statement POLOKWANE – Members of Vala Umgodi Operations multi-disciplinary forces in Capricorn District, have conducted an intelligence led operation which resulted in the recovery of the illegal mining equipment at Bergenek Village in Westenburg policing precinct, in the early hours of Sunday, 02 March 2025. Subsequent to information received, the members activated an operation at the identified location. Upon arrival at the illegal mining site in Bergenek, a group of suspects were busy digging on the ground, and ran away to different directions and disappeared in the darkness upon noticing the police. Police found the abandoned illegal mining equipment as follows: * 01 x Metal detector machine * 04 x Shovels, * 06 x Picks, * 01 x Nike back-bag * 01 x Q20 tin, * 01 x Panga, * 01 x Saw, * 03 x Small torches, * 01 x detector battery, * 01 x Redmi Xiaomi cellphone, * 02 x Nokia cellphone, * 01 x Redmi power bank, * 01 x small scale, * 01 x Big torch, All the items were confiscated and captured at Westenburg SAPS. The Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has welcomed the confiscation of the illegal mining equipment and encouraged members to wage a war against illegal mining activities across the province. Further police investigations are continuing. The Vala Umgodi operations are underway. Ends
