KWAZULU-NATAL – On Thursday 27 February 2025, the Hawks members from Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation served a summons to a 39-year-old suspect to appear before the Port Shepstone Regional Court on 18 March 2025, for dealing in drugs. In August 2022, based on intelligence gathered, the Hawks launched an undercover operation to investigate reports of whoonga capsules being sold in the Margate area. An undercover police agent made contact with the suspect, who proceeded to sell the agent whoonga capsules. A search of the suspect revealed additional whoonga capsules, totalling an estimated value of R400-00. The suspect was arrested and charged with dealing in drugs. However, the case was initially withdrawn in February 2023, pending the receipt of the lab report. In January 2025, the lab report confirmed the presence of narcotics in the seized substances, paving the way for the issuance of a summons by the Port Shepstone Magistrates Court. The swift and meticulous work of the Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation culminated in the serving of the summons on the suspect on 27 February 2025, signalling the beginning of the next phase in the criminal justice process. The KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona applauded the members for the good work. “we remain committed to rooting out illicit drug activities in our communities”, he said.
