Media Statement EASTERN CAPE – Anele Phylious Mayisha (44), the current Public Representative Councillor, Lundini Local Municipality appeared before Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on 19 February 2025 on allegations of fraud. Mayisha’s court appearance follows his arrest by the Bizana Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team of the Hawks on the same day. In 2014, it is alleged that the complainant’s mentally challenged brother was riding in a tractor coming from a nearby forest to fetch poles. Subsequently, the reports indicated that the tractor capsized and the victim allegedly sustained severe injuries resulting in his leg to be amputated. In the same year, the suspect apparently approached the complainant and offered to assist the victim in lodging a claim against Road Accident Fund (RAF). Further allegations exposed that the suspect referred the victim to certain lawyers who are based in Mthatha to assist with the claim. On 17 March 2021, the complainant allegedly became suspicious as he received information from the lawyers that RAF made a pay-out to the victim’s bank account. The complainant on behalf of the victim opened a case at KwaBhaca police station. The matter was later handed over to the Hawks for investigation. The Hawks uncovered that the suspect ostensibly took the victim’s bank card as well as pin number, then transferred cash to the value of R1 million to his bank account. Further investigations established that the victim was compensated by RAF an amount of over R1.5 million, that led to him being prejudiced cash to the value of R1 million. Through meticulous investigation led the suspect being arrested by Bizana SCCI of the Hawks on 19 February 2025, and appeared before the Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crimes court on the same day. Mayisha was released on R5000 bail and the matter was remanded to 27 February 2025 for legal representation. Ends
