WESTERN CAPE – The Hawks’ South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB), team based in Bellville assisted by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) have on 12 February 2025, discovered a clandestine laboratory in Paarl where steroids were being illegally manufactured. This stems from January 2023, when the Hawks’ received information about steroids that were couriered from Franschoek and distributed to local recipients. The parcels were intercepted and sent to the laboratory for testing of which the report came back positive. Two suspects were identified and further investigation was conducted. Today, 12 February 2025, premises was identified and it was fully operational. Search and seizure operation was authorised and conducted. During the search, pressing, sorting and labelling machines, scales and ovens were discovered. Moreover, powder and suspected Schedule 4 medicines were also discovered. The value of the steroids is yet to be determined.
One suspect aged 27 has been arrested and will appear at the Paarl Magistrates Court once charged. More arrests are imminent.
