POLOKWANE – The police in Waterberg District paid a heartfelt tribute to Sergeant Leah Mosalofi Malebye (47) during a solemn official funeral held in her home village of Ngobi, Northwest Province, on 8 February 2025. The ceremony was presided over by Acting Waterberg District Commissioner Brigadier I.M. Mhlongo, who honoured the memory of the dedicated police officer whose life was tragically cut short. Sergeant Malebye, who served at the Rooiberg Police Station, was allegedly attacked and killed by her boyfriend, with her lifeless body discovered by her 6-year-old grandson. The motive for this senseless act remains uncertain, although domestic violence cannot be ruled out. The police have since arrested the suspect involved in the heinous act. In his address, the acting District Commissioner Mhlongo stated, “As we gather today to honor the life of Sergeant Leah Mosalofi Malebye, we do so with heavy hearts. She was a dedicated and courageous police officer who served our community with distinction. Her passing leaves a profound void in our ranks, but her memory will continue to inspire us.” He emphasized the urgent need to address domestic violence, saying, “Domestic violence has claimed another life, leaving behind a trail of pain and sorrow. Even in death, Sergeant Malebye’s legacy compels us to confront this issue head-on. We have a responsibility to recognize the signs of domestic violence, support survivors, and hold perpetrators accountable.” Brigadier Mhlongo extended heartfelt condolences to Sergeant Malebye’s family, remarking, “Your loss is our loss. We share in your grief. Let us honour Sergeant Malebye’s memory by recommitting ourselves to the fight against domestic violence, striving to create a society where everyone can live free from fear.” The funeral was attended by SAPS officers, community leaders, and members of the Rooiberg Community Policing Forum, who provided a guard of honour to reflect their admiration for Sergeant Malebye’s service.
Warrant Officer (Rev) Letsoalo concluded the service with a sermon, offering encouragement and comfort to family members and mourners.
