EASTERN CAPE – Akhona Unathi Deyi (51) appeared before the Engcobo Magistrate’s court on 5 February 2025 for allegations of kidnapping. His court appearance came after he was arrested by the Hawks’ Mthatha Serious Organised Crime Investigation in joint collaboration with Mthatha Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VCIU), Madeira Visible Policing and Mthatha Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) on 3 February 2025. His co-accused Mpumelelo Nyosi (41) and Ntsika Tyali (38) a professional assistant nurse at Ngangelizwe clinic in Mthatha, were arrested in July 2024 and January 2025 respectively. It is alleged that on 6 June 2024, two victims were reportedly accosted by unidentified armed suspects that reportedly barged into their residence at Engcobo. The suspects reportedly pointed the victims with firearms. Further reports exposed that the victims were forced into an unknown vehicle, to unknown place and later on the day a ransom was demanded by the suspects. During the said incident, the suspects apparently took the victim’s bank card and pin numbers where they presumably withdrew cash in tranches and purchased expensive clothing from various retail shops.
