Media Statement GAUTENG – The multidisciplinary Operation Shanela which is conducted weekly in the province has resulted in the arrest of more than one thousand suspects which include 118 undocumented persons. The operation is normally conducted in three phases; the overnight suspects raiding by the detectives throughout the province, multidisciplinary roadblock and compliance inspections at liquor outlets and second hand dealers, patrols at hotspot areas, stop and searches and vehicle check points. All these activities are done simultaneously throughout the five districts in the province. In Tshwane, the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni led the operation which resulted in the arrest of 120 suspects for various crimes which included 39 undocumented persons, 22 drunk and driving, six possession of drugs and 10 illegal shebeens were also closed. In Johannesburg District, the multidisciplinary forces arrested 69 suspect while the Sedibeng District arrested 30 suspects of which 20 were for drunk and driving. Ekurhuleni arrested 28 suspect that includes 19 drunk and driving and West Rand team arrested 31 suspects. Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni commended the multidisciplinary teams of the districts for their continuous efforts in ensuring that the people of Gauteng are safe. He further encouraged the communities to join hands in the fight against crime by reporting any criminal activities on the Crime Stop Hotline at 08600 10111 or anonymously give tip-offs on MySAPS App which can be downloaded on any smartphone.
