Media Statement LUCKHOFF – A 26-year-old accused, Leonard Olyn, pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 14 years’ direct imprisonment before the Free State High Court in Bloemfontein. A passer-by noticed an unconscious female victim at the graveyard on 24 March 2024 at about 06:30. Police were summoned to the scene, and the victim, Elvira Syster, aged 23, was taken to Pelonomi Hospital and she succumbed to her injuries on 31 March 2024. Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim had bruises as she was severely beaten. Police found a running shoe with blood stains as well as a T-shirt. The accused was apprehended the following day as he was seen wearing the same T-shirt found at the crime scene. The blood-stained running shoe and T-shirt were taken to the Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis and the results came back positive and linked the accused to the murder. Detective Warrant Officer Paseka Tsokolibane, who was assigned to the case, successfully opposed bail and the accused was in custody until he was sentenced. The accused pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 14 years’ direct imprisonment and further declared unfit to possess a firearm before Free State High Court.
