Media Statement NORTHERN CAPE – The newly appointed MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison in the Northern Cape, Ms Limakatso Koloi had the privilege of formally meeting the Provincial SAPS Management today, 03 February 2025 at the Provincial Commissioner’s offices in Kimberley. The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola facilitated the meeting and commenced the session with an introduction of all attendees. In attendance were the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection, Major General Luntu Ngubelanga, and the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Major General Jonny Besnaar, the five District Commissioners, Provincial Heads and Senior Station Commanders within the province. In her introductory remarks, the MEC indicated that the safety of the people in the Northern Cape is in her hands and she has great respect for the men and women in blue. She also stated that it is our responsibility as the Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison and SAPS, to keep our communities safe and making it even more challenging is the fact that they can be difficult, making it demanding for the police to do their work. Since her appointment on 21 January 2025 as the MEC responsible for Community Safety, she noted that the province is faced with many issues and the main one being Gender Based Violence and Femicide. This pandemic is a major problem in the province and we need the support and assistance of the community to fight this scourge, which is a societal challenge. She also anticipates to get vibrant Women against Crime, Community Policing Forums and other structures in place, to play an active role in the community. MEC Koloi committed herself to meet all Community Policing Forums and structures in the province and see how, together they can bring down crime, which is crippling our communities. Drugs is also another worrisome problem, as it has infiltrated our societies. She stated that she has full trust in the Provincial Commissioner, her Management and the SAPS in the province and this relationship between the Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison and the SAPS, will be based on mutual respect which is a vital and fundamental principle. In addition she mentioned that trust between the two departments is of outmost importance and without it, it nothing can function. For her, community outreach programmes is very critical and it allows for community interaction and engagements. In conclusion, she motivated and urged Lieutenant General Otola and all SAPS employees, not to become discouraged by the negative behaviour and comments from the public, but to stand firm in the fight against crime. Colonel Henry Griffiths attached to the Provincial Organizational Development and Strategic Management component gave a concise and brief overview of the province’s profile.
