The suspect appeared alongside his 51-year-old co-accused who was arrested in Delmas on 21 January 2025 for allegedly and unlawfully using his employer’s fleet card. As a result the employer suffered an actual loss of R935 301.00. A day after, the 48 year old suspect was arrested after his brief appearance in Middelburg on 22 January 2025 for a different case that involved fleet cards scamming. On 22 January 2025, his Middelburg case was referred to the Middelburg Commercial Crimes Court scheduled for 07 March 2025. The 48 year-old-suspect was rearrested by the Hawks Middelburg based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation just after his court appearance in Delmas on 30 January 2025 for a third case where he was also involved in fleet cards related irregularities in Middelburg. He allegedly unlawfully benefitted the sum of R11 361.00. He is expected to make his first court appearance for his third arrest in Middleburg Magistrate’s Court on 31 January 2025. The Mpumalanga Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Major General Nico Gerber, said the frequency of card scamming is alarming and the public is warned to be vigilant and not to fall prey to these crimes. Businesses are encouraged to have proper control over fleet cards and ensure they are used appropriately and put preventative measures in place. Ends
