Media Statement MTHATHA – The OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana applauded the Tactical Response Team (TRT) in the district for their commitment in fighting crime and arresting a 33-year-old male suspect in possession of unlicensed firearms. Police found the arms cache in Ngonya locality, Ngcwanguba Administrative area in Kwaaiman outside Mqanduli on Wednesday, 29 January 2025 at about 18:00. The 33-year-old suspect has been sought as a person of interest for questioning in respect of criminal activities around his area and was spotted driving a Toyota bakkie which was stopped. Thorough investigation led police to his homestead in Ngonya locality where firearms and ammunition were recovered. Amongst the recovered unlicensed firearms, all with no serial numbers were; R5 Rifle, AK 47, shotgun, pistol and .38 Revolver and with 05 X R5 magazines, 01 X AK 47 magazine, 01 X Pistol magazine and a number of assortment of ammunition together with suspected stolen property. The suspect was arrested and charged for unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and possession of suspected stolen property. He is due to appear at Mqanduli Magistrate Court on Friday, 31 January 2025. The OR Tambo District Commissioner Maj Gen Modishana re-iterated his stance that police will continuously carry out their mandate of preventing, investigating crime and bringing all perpetrators thereof to justice. “No stone will be left unturned as forces on the ground are hard at work for all communities in the district to be safe, he concluded.
