Media Statement EASTERN CAPE – A 47-year-old doctor has been arrested by the Mthatha Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team of the Hawks in collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the South African Revenue Service (SARS), under the Honey Badger Project. The arrest, effected on 21 January 2025, follows allegations of fraud and contraventions of the Tax Administration Act No. 28 of 2011 (Section 234(2)(d)) and the Income Tax Act No. 58 of 1962. The suspect has been served with a J175 summons to appear in court in this matter. Preliminary investigations indicate that SARS allegedly identified tax discrepancies during routine assessments, raising suspicions of possible alleged tax evasion. The matter was referred to the Hawks for further investigation. Findings suggest that the accused allegedly failed to submit personal income tax returns for the 2021 to 2023 tax years and repeatedly ignored compliance reminders from SARS. The accused is scheduled to make first court appearance at the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on 06 February 2025. Ends
