Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – The rapid response from dedicated members attached to Operation Shanela who are deployed in Khayelitsha, led to the recovery of a hijacked vehicle and the arrest of a 32-year-old male for possession thereof as well as the illegal possession of ammunition. On Wednesday, 14 January 2025 at about 17:00, the members followed up on information about a hijacked vehicle, a white Toyota Quantum minibus that was hijacked earlier in Makhaza policing precinct. The members spotted the vehicle in Qandu Qandu informal settlement and while approaching it, a group of men disembarked the vehicle and ran into different directions. The members in pursuit managed to arrest one the men who was found in possession of a loaded magazine. The hijacked vehicle was recovered and impounded for safeguarding. The 32-year-old suspect was arrested for the possession of the hijacked vehicle and the illegal possession of ammunition. He will appear in Khayelitsha Magistrates’ court, once charged.
Meanwhile, members of Shanela deployed in Nyanga performed crime prevention duties in Sinqolampthi Street in Browns Farm when they noticed a suspicious 23-year-old man in the street which they approached and searched. They discovered a 7.65 pistol with an empty magazine on his person. He was subsequently arrested for the possession of a prohibited firearm. The suspect will appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ court, once charged.
