MPUMALANGA – A white VW Amarok valued at R250 000 that was seized at Perdekop in May 2020 was forfeited to the state. The Hawks Middelburg based Asset Forfeiture Investigation of Priority Crime Specialised Investigation was granted a preservation order by the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court of South Africa, Mbombela, on Friday, 03 January 2025. Members of Perdekop SAPS were busy with their normal duties when they stopped and searched a VW Amarok. The vehicle with two occupants, America Daniel Njango (60) and Sibusiso Semto Mhlongo (20), was fully loaded with copper cables, and the occupants could not provide any proof of purchase or ownership. The suspects were arrested for possession of suspected stolen copper cables. Further investigation revealed that the copper cables belong to Transnet, and it was positively identified by Transnet. The suspects were found guilty by Armersfoort Regional Court on 18 March 2024. Njango was sentenced to ten years imprisonment whilst Mhlongo was sentenced to eight years imprisonment. The Mpumalanga Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Major General Nico Gerber, said both the sentence and the preservation order will send a stern warning to other would be individuals that are involved in criminal activities. The HAWKS will ensure all criminal benefits and instrumentalities used in the commission of crime will be pursued and forfeited to the state. Crime does not pay, he concluded. Ends
